No disc message on Sat Nav welcome screen

Hi everyone

Just got my 7th gen Accord and wasnt too happy to find one of its toys didnt work :unsure:

The Sat Nav welcome / home screen tells me no disc is inserted...behind that I can see the Start Up info...."This system provides route info...." etc.

I have Google maps on my iPhone anyway so its not really a problem. What is annoying now after owning the car for just one week is if I dont press one of the other buttons "audio" for example the screen wont shutdown/sleep. :wacko:

So from reading around I think I need the disc/dvd mentioned - can anyone tell me the best way to obtain one of these?

Also...not sure if this may seem stupid :) but does the disc have to be inserted whenever the Sat Nav is in use? Ive used Sat Nav systems in hire cars and Ive never seen the disc drive or been asked to insert a disc.

yes, the DVD has to remain in the the drive if you're using SatNav; it can also be upgraded by purchasing another disc, but it isn't cheap!
 
Thanks a lot for helping out.

I'm not used to cars with built in Sat Nav but this seems odd and clumsy taking discs in and out - Is it an old method? Do more modern than my 2005 Accord operate like this too??
 
More modern systems can be even more complicated as they are voice activated, more roads mapped more info added, means more memory needed.
There are 2 discs for later model Honda's, one for Eastern Europe and one for Western Europe, such is the amount of info that they carry.

Find a cheap disc on ebay, gumtree, see if that doesn't solve your issue?

I've had a look online yep - seen some for about £34 on ebay...read that copied discs arent good for the laser though...that right?
 
Just for clarification, the sat nav disk goes in the DVD drive at the bottom of the center console behind the little flap, not in the main headunit. It shouldn't normally need to be removed at all.

I just keep mine in (DVD Rom) as it doesn't interfere with the main CD changer which holds 6 CD's. It's a method that is still used in newer cars, and is a money spinner for Car manufacturer's as they do need updating every so often; if you can afford it! See if you can get the laser cleaned with the kits that are around!
 
Thanks Accordaz - When I get a disc I'll just leave it in too. I cant see me playing other DVD's in the car to be honest.

Interesting to know new cars also use this technology.
 
I'd advise against the cleaning kits. People have used them in the past and had bad experienced. Our DVD drives don't always like them. Search the forum. Somewhere there's a guide for removing, taking the outer case off and cleaning with cotton buds and lens cleaning fluid. I did this recently. Took me 20 minutes (although I've had the dash apart before so knew what I needed to do). It's a simple enough job. And it worked a treat as mine had stopped reading discs and now reads them instantly!
 
Haven't even tried. Are we talking films and stuff? I just figured it was designed to be the sat nav and nothing else.

yes, it's what I thought too, but from what I've read somewhere you can add a piece of kit to it to play DVD's!
 
Oh, you mean the XCarlink. Yeah I had a mate who used to have an Accord and did this. It's basically means you can plug an iPod, or any kind of portable video device such as a portable DVD player etc into, also supports a reversing camera.

However, this didn't play off the DVD Rom drive of the Sat Nav. This taps into the system an operates as an alternate video input device that you need to switch over or something. Also the device is about £100 and you still need to route the audio through the aux input of the stereo meaning you need the XCarlink audio interface too...

Some people have done it and it's very cool, but it is a mod that can add up financially.

That said, I've done lots of video/audio hacking between my hobby of arcade machine restoration and my job as a sound engineer, so I'm sure if I could be bothered I could figure out a way to make this happen. I just don't really have the time or impetus.

Any chance you get paste the link of the DIY lens cleaning?
I couldn't found that post, and my unit would stopped working 45 mins after the engine started.
