Hi, sorry if this has been answered before.

My 2.4 auto has covered 85k. I ***ume the chain has auto tensioning so what service issues are there for the chain on the petrol engine?

Thanks for any advice.

Gerry

This is a good question that I don't no.Iv nether heard about any issues on petrol cars so I'm ***uming the chain nether needs changing or servicing.Guys correct me if I'm wrong lol

no servicing on chain and yes its auto tension, good quality oil will ensure it lasts a lifetime!

Thanks Jav for clarifying that mate lol

Many Thanks Jav. The cam chain attracted me to the vtec engine.

I have stuck with dealer servicing so far and like to know what to expect when they advise on a major service

Regards
Gerry

Hi Gerry, the best way to preserve the chain is to keep the oil clean...a lot of TA members do oil changes every 6k miles instead of the 12.5k specified by Honda...12.5k intervals keep fleet managers happy but some private owners including me think that is far too long.

There have been a few issues with stretched chains, but its very rare and as everyone says - ensure you use decent synthetic oil with frequent changes of no longer than 10k mile intervals.

the whole point of a cam chain was to never be changed and to keep costs down but if you want to upgrade the tensioner Skunk2 Racing do one and Hybrid racing the difference these make are unbelievable

Nissan always quote that their chains last 'for life' but won't be drawn on what 'life' actually means. Reading between the lines of various documents, it appears to mean ten years. I had to replace a Micra chain and tensioner at just over 100k because the tensioner had started to break up and filled the sump with bits. Interference engine too...

Surely any properly maintained cam chain (be it Honda or otherwise) will easily go the distance regards the engine's natural life span. Maybe if you're going to drive it for so long that major engine components will need replacing, then change the cam change too. But I'd have thought that as long as it's well looked after it should last for as long as it needs to.

That is obviously with oil changes and not being permanently driven into the red regards the revs
