Torn between petrol and diesel

dont know where you are getting your stats from but the saloon looks a very good motor indeed, cant see how anyone can say the tourer is better looking than it.

and a quick search on autotrader says 135 saloons, vs 45 estates (tourers) on sale uk wide.

What Osiris said is right, as long as them petrol Accords have a good service, they should be very reliable, the only worry is suspension and clutch. but any car on 100k+ miles will have the same issues to deal with.

Hmm, massive car park space overhang... picture submitted to YouParkLikeAC*nt.com

I bought my tourer purely because I wanted it as a load-lugger (not for the looks), but nevertheless it is an attractive car. I find the saloon looks oddly bulky at the rear, as though Honda ran out of design funding when they got to that bit. Despite the superior handling, I guess that's why the saloon isn't so popular?

Jeez, I wasn't after a review of my parking - it was dumped at the back of my office for 5 mins while I picked someone up (hence windows down).

Anyway, I also bought a tourer because I needed space, the Mrs' Mondeo Estate packed up and she decided to get a V6 Saloon to replace it, leaving me with the Load Lugger requirement, however I am fine with this because I genuinely think it is the better looking car, each to their own I guess. I also find having no rear wiper a pain tbh, but that is probably just me.

Yes Eric, there will be more saloons for sale than tourers... saloon owners (presumably fed up of the pointing and cruel taunts) are naturally desperate to get rid of them.

or maybe for the simple reason 7th gen estates were not sold in abundance in the first place (which is more plausible)

are you sure the taunting is not directed towards the estate...that or i need to go to specsavers. :p

can someone get me a 7th gen 'tourer' that looks better than this..?

either that or i will go to get my eyes checked.

that is nice, one of the best i have seen so far.

but i still think its too gangly to be thrown around a track the way a modded saloon could.

^^
might be phrased awkwardly

That looks like a very remote location... has it been dumped?

lol - probably. Because he couldn't get the dogs in it.

That white Tourer is beautiful!

RE : Track driving, I took my Tourer to Snetterton in the summer and it held its own, but obviously I can't compare to a Saloon.

K24s can drive to remote locations without breaking down along the way.

Aye - as long as it's within 200 miles of a fuel station

Guys at a choise I would have had a 8th gen tourer but in a 2.4 there like rocking horse sh t

^^ for a tourer in 7th gen i would agree, i cant imagine that having much agility, plus modding parts are not readily available.

whereas a k24 saloon on coilovers and you wont mind that petrol expense for the remote snap in the middle of no where, you will probably do it more than once in fact. B)

in any event the k24 is excellent on fuel consumption on long runs, 400+ miles easily achievable plus a wide grin for gratis.

:D started something now lol

still undecided.. if i can get 3 coiled 150 m, and 3 kit bags in the back im happy :)

decisions , im sure the right one will turn up ..:)
got into trouble for mentioning the 2.4 :D

lol

well best bet is drive both diesel, petrol and estate and saloon.

stock suspension on 7th gen is useless, if you are a car enthusiast, the first thing you should do is put on proper suspension (going to be like a whole new car)

get a diesel if you want, doesn't bother me the slightest., but from your initial post it doesn't look like you do enough driving to warrant a diesel, and they are more prone to mishaps and niggles.

and don't be worried on fuel consumption on the 2.4, its just marginally worse than the 2 litre and much more fun to drive.

Our daft banter about saloon/tourer superiority should be very little relevance to the OP.*

With regard to diesel/petrol, then that is a much, much more difficult question to answer! The diesel is a much more economical choice and is a lovely motorway cruiser, but engine/clutch parts can be horribly expensive however - as I've said elsewhere before - diesel models aren't as unreliable as you might think... the larger number of reported problems is mostly due to the far greater number of diesel Accords compared to petrol Acords, and the much higher average mileage they tend to have covered. The 2.4 (K24) petrol is a lovely, reliable engine that gives impressive acceleration and performance, but if you use that potential regularly you will get very disappointing fuel consumption and you may well need to have the driveshafts replaced (which is a common K24 issue), plus the VED is a much higher cost. Personally, I have a diesel because I was doing very high mileages over 5 years ago when I bought it, now that I hardly do many miles I'd get a 2.4 petrol (yes Eric, I put it in writing) ... I support Steve's view that 15k miles is a reasonable divide. In the 60k miles I've put on mine (and now at nearly 150k miles in total) I've only suffered one diesel-specific breakdown which only cost me 93 quid for a simple DIY repair (a fuel pump valve failure). I feel the 2 litre petrol is a compromise between the other two, but who wants to compromise? Compromise usually equals the worst of both worlds, IMO!

*Although the tourer is obviously a more handsome and practical vehicle that has been scientifically proven to make you 287% more attractive to the opposite ***.

brilliant

can i give you my address so....

I was in discussion with some motor show about lumping a k24 into Jons car and see how he reacted when he took off.... :D

Yes, the performance increase would be noticeable! :D

But so would only getting half the distance from a tank of fuel

said id think about it, wanted to get a few opinions first

test drove excellent , didnt realise was 5 speed but liked it :)

walk away or make it a possibilty ?

get it to a decent garage for a full inspection, milage is a bit above normal

mine is 2004 and on 119k.

but its petrol, can handle it.

at 2 grand it could be a good buy indeed, not as good as a 2.4 but still.

get a garage to check it?

as discussed previously, 2.4 accords hard to get, estate or saloon

clearly the uk is ending up like Ireland now and anything bigger than a 2 litre and you are considered some lunatic on a rampage of destruction.

another reason is owners of 2.4 accords dont want to sell... I have one and dont see a reason to sell it for another car.

has anyone a graph of petrol vs diesel sales/registrations in the uk?

i think for the last 6 years or so there would be a serious trend for diesel and/or smaller petrol cars.?

Ireland by now is a pure tractor society, its practically impossible to tax a 2.4 or 3 litre petrol car. almost every new car sold in Ireland is diesel or petrols in the 1.4 litre class, (ie 1.4/1.6 litre saloons....!)

sad state of affairs...!

quite like the white :)
been looking at the gunmetal colour accords :) going to look at a 2005 diesel tourer in the morning , 153,000 Miles full honda service history.
Like both the tourer and saloon but drawn towrds saloon.... but for some reason im wanting the nav to and non around on my budget :(
