Hello forum,

I'm posting to hopefully get some advice and thoughts on what to do with my 1992 2.0l Accord Aerodeck. I've owned the car since 2007. In my ownership, it's had a fair amount of work done, but it's reaching the point where I either have to put a lot more work into it, or sell it or, worst case, scrap it. It's been a reliable car and has given me good service, so I would prefer not to scrap it. But, I don't think I have the funds to bring it back to good condition again.

The outstanding issues are:

- Despite having replaced the *entire* exhaust including the manifold and down pipes, it is blowing from the top end. This is especially noticable at higher RPMs or under hard acceleration at any engine speed. I have re-fitted the entire exhaust myself with new seals and bolts where needed. The rear silencer will be in need of replacement soon. I have found it hard to get hold of parts for the exhaust - parts for the 2.2 engined version seem to be very easy to come by, but the 2.0 seems to be nearly impossible. I was told when I last replaced the rear silencer that I had perhaps the last one in the country. The exhaust sounds pretty bad, when in fact most of it is new. It makes the car sound like and old banger.

- Both rear wheel arches are rusty. They have already been fixed up but it's coming through again, and worse this time. There's a hole in the driver's side rear quarter, next to the wheel arch, which is covered over with black duck tape.

- The boot door has a hole a few inches wide and about an inch high. It is also covered over with black duck tape.

- The heater controls aren't great - about half way between hot and cold, there's a very stiff bit. The control works, but not as it should.

- The air conditioning hasn't worked for some years. Various air-con "specialists" have looked at it and after charging me for many re-gasses, have been unable to fix it.

- The car is hard to drive smoothly. It will drive at motorways all day with no problem at all, but around town, it's jerky and bunny-hops very easily. Asking the car for hard acceleration can often result in a noticable lurch, much more than I would expect and more than I have ever experience in any of my other cars. A degree of knowing how to play the clutch allows me to drive it smoothly, but it's not ideal.

- The electric aerial mast has been snapped off by some local idiots. The motor works but I have disconnected it until the mast can be replaced.

- The central locking on the driver's door doesn't work properly. Sometimes it just blocks me from unlocking the door until I've turned the key to the lock position again (even though the car is already locked). Other times it will unlock. Then unlock again. And again. And again. And again. The central locking works fine if I use the boot lock or the passenger door.

- The factory/dealer fit alarm doesn't work. There's a key lock inside the glove box, but I don't have a key for it.

And I think that's about it!

I'd appreciate thoughts on what to do with this car. It's given me good service, but it's getting to the point where I don't think it will get through its next MOT (May), and I think it's beyond my financial means to repair.

Thanks!

This sounds like quite a project for someone. 4th Gen Aerodecks are beautiful and hopefully someone here might be able to take it off your hands and bring it back to former glory. Could you please upload some pictures?

I'd love to see it fully restored, and I'd love to be able to do it myself. It's a fantastic looking car and aside from the bunny-hopping issues, it drives great. I don't seem to have any photos of it on my computer at the moment, so I'll take some in the day tomorrow. In the meantime, here's a very cold and wet starting video back from 2008, before the exhaust started to fall apart. The car still starts as easily as it does in this video. :)

(edit: missed out half a sentence... )

We do have a 4th gen guru here (username 93 Accord). I'm sure his 4th gen radar will pick this up soon and he'll be along to help you out ;) .

Whereabouts in the country are you mate? Would be great if this car could be kept going, the 4th gen Aerodecks are great looking cars :)

I'm down in the south, near Bournemouth. :)

Some further information; the car has full service history. Honda main dealer up to 74k, then mostly Honda main dealer up to 112k, then serviced by either of two local garages who look after my cars, up to its current mileage of 143k.

I'm not looking to sell it right now - I'll keep it at least until its next MOT Is due in May, and depending on what it fails on, I'll consider my options. But it's definitely worth joining the forums regardless of whether I'm selling it or not. I'm looking to buy a 7th gen estate when I find the right one. :)

Whatever you do please don't scrap it! They are very rare and if you don't have the time and funds to restore her then hopefully there will be someone out there who can!

BTW I noticed a white CRX in your vid, is that yours? What others Honda's you have?

Looks lovely mate! The 4g Aerodecks are mega cool :)

I'm down South too btw! If it ever does come up for sale I may be interested depending on space, I've got a few old Honda's lurking around already

All those problems are piece of cake, to solve, I have either fixed or had all of those with mine. The costly issue is the arches, but Ive found a solution for that in germany which is cheap.

If you need any advice on parts and sourcing ill sort you out. But only if you dont scrap it :p

Listen to Marcus, he's our absolute 4th Gen guru. With his help, you can get this into a show quality car in the most economical way possible. Please don't scrap it.

I'm taking the car down to a bodywork shop in Portsmouth on Monday for a quote on the bodywork. I don't know how much I'm prepared to spend on this car now, because as much as I do enjoy driving it, I'm saving my pennies for a 7th Gen 2.4 auto estate.

Marcus, what's the German wheel arch solution?

exec - I had two Mk2 CRXs at one point, both of them are now gone. One went for parts, the other went to a CRX-UK club member who stripped it right down and fully restored it. He put it on a rolling road and it still put out 130bhp, excellent, given that that was its rated engine power when new! He then fitted a turbo and got some really nice powerformance figures. The turbo was removed when he gave it to a family member. As far as I'm aware it's still on the road.

There are also a pair of Mk2 Polos, a 1995 Mitsubishi FTO and a 1978 Mercedes 350SL in the yard. :)

:( What a shame. Hopefully someone will buy this and restore to former glory. Good luck with the sale.

Just out of curiosity, I asked another garage to give the car a check over and do a head gasket test, then ***uming it didn't need any major work, put it through an MOT. To my surprise, not only did it pass the head gasket test, it passed its MOT too! The mechanic said he couldn't understand how it had been diagnosed as a head gasket failure as he could find no signs of it failing at all.

So after a quick fluid top-up, it's been back in semi-regular use. As it's been spending longer amounts of time sitting around not being driven (I work away), I've been sure to keep on top of fluids and tyres etc. but nothing unusual has come up.

Unfortunately as much as I love driving this car, I still feel it's time to move on. So I'll be revisiting my For Sale thread, and hopefully getting a sale for it soon.

Now for sale again. The bodywork has been taken care of and is sound, and it's had a new clutch kit, but it needs an ABS sensor, paint, and more. For sale thread is here: http://typeaccord.co.uk/forum/topic/23269-for-sale-4th-gen-1993-accord-aerodeck-20/

Someone please buy it? There's no chance of me being able to put more work into it now, and I know if I put it on eBay it'll probably end up going around a banger racing track...

Ok, so it didn't meet its reserve on eBay. I would still prefer it to be sold to a owner's club member, so I'm offering it to someone here for the price it went for on eBay - £102 - on the understanding that it doesn't go for banger racing.

My previous for sale thread is here: http://typeaccord.co.uk/forum/topic/23269-for-sale-4th-gen-1993-accord-aerodeck-20/ and the auction listing is here: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/182518733252 Between the thread and the listing, there's a pretty detailed description of the car's condition.

Given the interest I've had in this thread in the past I'd like to think someone would take it off my hands but that has so far seemed to not be the case. Even as a spares car it's worth more than I'm asking.

So come on, someone save this car. If there's no interest here, then I might consider one more round of eBay (where it'll probably either sell to a breaker or a banger racer) and if it doesn't go there then it's off, with regret, to the scrap man. I'm at a point now where I need the space more than I need the car.

would someone buy it on ebay for banger racing ?

or would they be buying it to sell the parts ?

Sadly for £100 people are likely bidding on it for a particular part. Then take few easy sell bits off it and then scrap it. Thats the honest truth. The key issues why this isnt selling is the chassis issues and engine issues.

From my point of view this is a shame. But unless you are a 4th gen fan, it doesnt make much sense.

Realistically this is a great rolling spares for another 4th gen. In which both 4th gens will live on.

If you have the space, you could break it. I can garrantee youll make more than 100.

@freddofrog Cheap cars on eBay are a great source of cars for banger racers. I used to know a couple of banger racers. One bought cheap from the local paper, ran until the MOT ran out then raced it. Another would get cars from his Dad's workshop - cars that his Dad's customers didn't want to pay for - expensive repairs etc. Both looked out for cheap cars wherever they could get them - online, in the paper, etc. So consider this car - it's large, it has a reliable Honda engine, it can take a lot of punishment, and it's cheap - it's perfect banger racing material. Some racers will sell some of what they strip out of the car, some just bin the whole lot.

@93 accord It is a shame. I have no objection to it either being used as spares. The chassis is good - the rust has been fixed, so it would also be a good car to rebuild. I know it'd get more than £100 as parts, however I work away during the week so breaking it myself is not an option. You could always buy it from me - even taking into account the cost of trailering it back to the Midlands, you'd still make a profit...

Hey! I really want my CB7 to run again so am in a place to give you good money for this car for parts I need.
