What sort of mpg do you all get on your diesels?

I know its not an Accord  but my Monday-Friday diesel is currently averaging 7.91MPG so far this week. Just a shame my Accord aint got a V8 580BHP diesel under the bonnet

What do you drive? HGV?? Is 7.91mpg good going? What mileage is shown on the display, it looks massive!

Yes mate its a HGV the display is in kms its 631254 just about 400,000 miles on it. 7.91 is not too bad as its a V8 Scania so not the most economical and I have come from Workington to Scotch Corner with a total weight of around 43 tonnes which aint helped either.

I thought the mileage was 6 million! I wonder if Fahad could remap that?

Apparently he can!

OMG I feel the need to get my boss to get my truck remapped! We have 2 620bhp Scanias but Faddy's remap will push mine to 675bhp mmmmm

That would be an interesting one to run by the fleet manager

It'll no doubt increase fuel economy and soon pay for itself.....

That's what I'd be telling your boss :)

Wonder if it'll pull a wheely?

Costs a few pennies eh?

Joking aside, tuning fleets is big business for us. You tune a fleet of five HGV's for economy, and even at £600 a pop, it's paid for itself in less than 2 months for some companies.

A genuine no brainer.

We even do tractors!!

ok, first tank of diesel used. well almost. i decided to fill up at 334 miles and tbh that wasn't far too off the empty mark but the light hadn't come on yet either. working it out at £1.35 per ltr makes it 30mpg. hmmm, not quite as good as i was hoping. that includes 100 miles driving back down the motorway when i bought it, i think there were three 50 mile round trips up the m40 to my parents and the rest was mostly stop start 1st and 2nd gear in town. i guess i could have been having a bit of fun with the turbo in the lower gears a bit so hopefully the next tank will fair a bit better. anyone else suffer with this low mpg out of their oil burner?

That sounds exceptionally low mate.. See what range you're getting on a full tank first then decide if you have a problem.

I have a question Fahad, if so many vehicles can be tuned for more power or more economy so easy, how come manufactures dont do this? With all the strict eco, emission and what not forcing better efficiency.

Im fully aware cars come very under optimised out the factory in neally every aspect, but with something like ECU tuning, if they can make it do (example 50mpg, why do they make it with 46mpg same with the power 130bhp or 190bhp.). Insurance group, tax bad? i can understand maybe with the power, but fuel economy?

Becuase they dont, and this is why you can make a business out of it, am im happy for that! but anyway thats my question lol.

Marcus, I guess you'll have to write to one and ask them but in my opinion, it's all of the reasons above. Generally all manufacturers want to leave a power reserve there to cater for various climatic conditions, marketing and product placement and the ability to offer different power options for different markets. Also, by leaving a power reserve in there, you're not pushing the engine to its maximum achievable ceiling - thereby maintaining a better level of reliability. That's the main reason we don't tend to push vehicles as hard as some other companies, and always aim to leave a reserve opting for a blended tune rather than an all out racing tune.

Interesting, i think you are right in what you say.

I have to say tho, if a car can be tuned for economy, why is everyone not doing it (who wants mpg anyway), less power, more mpg, surely less engine stress, longer engine life? wheres the negative?

In my opinion, the reason they don't do it from the factory (the fuel economy that is) is that is linked with the power gain. Better fuel economy is achieved by more power and torque, which allows earlier shifting and driving at lower speeds on a higher gear. Now if cars are more powerful, the various taxes will raise, will put the car into a different band an so on...

You can't make a tuning for mpg without altering all the other factors. They are all linked together.

^^^ yep.

We're simplifying it a lot here. And it's been said before, you can't get more power out of an engine without compromising long term reliability. The trick is to achieve the right balance.

Hi guys. few days ago I came back from holiday in Poland so I just want to share my experience with fuel consumption which was 70.1 mpg :D but in this time I drove aprox. 60-65 mp/h, but on the way back consumption was aprox 48 mpg which is OK at 95-100 mp/h . I never thought that 2.2 engine can be so economical :)

As I am getting around 36mpg on my tourer, I have a mixed bag of journey types, some motorway, a fair bit of city driving too. It is just reading around some people reckon they can get 600 miles from a tank!! Last one I managed about 420 :) I am driving carefully as well...
I just emptied my first tank and i got 540 miles from a tank full and that included cleaning a few cob webs out ..........

Oooof - I just did my first full to the brim test and thought I was gonna run out of fume son the M1 but then me dial raised a little:

IMG_0511.jpg

Lets see the maths - £81.50 of Shell VP = 57.03 litres = 12.54 gallons

503.6 / 12.54 = 40.16 mpg

Hmmmm - something can't be quite right here, I drove quit tamely and kept it under 80 most of the time with a good mix of dual carriageway and country roads.

Recently serviced and all!

Is your car a tourer? I use spritmonitor.de to work mine out and keep a record my tourer since I've had it:

43.5
39.7
45.2
42.5
40.6
40.1
41.6
39.1

All with climate on Auto all the time always under 80mph on motorway/dual carriageways and a little bit of heavy right foot but not all the time. Even driving steady I cant get it to do much over 40mpg!

Yeah its a tourer, I know I should have lost a little due to its age (04) but certainly not 8mpg!

You tourer boys really seem to suffer with your MPG figures over us saloon boys. Try shedding the extra load of the coffins in the back - all that extra weight can't be good for your MPG

the difference between cruising at 65/70 and 70/80 is immense.

I've noticed that too keep it below 2k rpm in 6th and its a lot more economical.

No coffins here just a lead implant in my right foot - I'm not too fussed to be honest my last motor only did 32MPG its a positive in the long run!

I have to be really really pushing it to get down to 40 in my tourer. usual hit rate is ~ 45ish sat at 80 indicated on motorways.

thats from a car thats shall we say "well run in" having now covered 162K....

My last 05 tourer managed 701miles on a single tank. The trick is change up before 2000rpm in every gear. I also drove at 50 everywhere when I was allowed to drive faster.
