What's new

VSA Modulator Light

I've recently had problems too. In Oct my Accord Tourer CDTI had the Manifold replaced under the extended warranty from Honda. I had no problems since, then last Sunday the VSA warning light came on, I took it to the dealer paid £35 for the check and was told it needs a new Modulator total cost £1800 including labour. The dealer has been very good and contacted Honda UK on my behalf to see if I could be ***isted with the costs. They have come back to me today and offered £800 goodwill. My car has done nearly 72k and is a 55 plate. I don't know whether to accept their offer or pursue it for more. It's under 6 years old, but has done 10k above the mileage that the extended warranty covers. What do others think?
Jacqu that's a great bit of good will take the £800 as most members hear has had nothing out of warranty.

To be honest I really feel this is a less than adiquate response from HUK... In my experiance, stamping your feet and making a fair bit of fuss tends to pay off.

I've had this ballache myself, in all cases where your VSA comes on:

Report it to Honda UK as soon as you can, they'll want you to go to a honda dealership, to have codes read to "confirm the fault"

Point out the extended warranty and how you are only just outside the threshold. The dealer will refer it to Honda, Honda will say no goodwill gesture to the dealer.

Then you call Honda direct and stamp your feet on how a non moving part has an arbritary milage given to it. Pending a couple of day's investigation they will offer some kind of goodwill gesture. This part as mentioned is not a service item so how which garage the vehicle is serviced in has any impact on the part is beyond any plausible reason.

I've seen a couple of cases (including mine) a rough estimate is you will have to pay about 5p per mile over the 62k mark... ergo 1000 miles your contribution to the part is somwhere in the region of £50. In almost all cases the labour will not be covered by HUK.

Ok so you wind up paying more than the £150 from the scrappy, but you get yourself an improved unit which, if it goes wrong, you have full accountability for.

Hope this helps!!

Some good points which share some thoughts I passed onto Honda in my latest correspondence - I will update when they reply.

Reply from BBA regarding the repair they carry out - interesting and certainly the less expensive option, the English used was that of BBA's rep - NOT mine! :

I can confirm that we in fact now repair the internal pressure sensor using our state of the art equipment, if this repair does not take we also offer the external repair. Subject to condition and a £35 testing fee if your unit is found to be fault the cost of the repair is £165 plus carriage and VAT this does is inclusive of your test fee and a 2 year warrantee

I think that's what I'd heard - BBA can't repair them properly, but sounds like they've changed their practise?

Either way, I still don't like the idea of repairing these units.

I'm taking from their statement that they do repair them properly, but if it's not possible they 'offer' the modification. Might be worth a shot at their price which is much cheaper, then again, is it a case of you get what you pay for - who knows?!

Hi Guys,

Sent my unit to ECU Testing. Posted last thing on the Tuesday, it arrived with them sometime Wednesday. Thursday got texts and emails from them saying they'd got it, tested it, repaired it and dispatched it (after a call from them to take my credit card details!). Got it back on the Friday. That's what I call a prompt service. Total bill £350+postage+VAT. They also confirmed that the repair was carried out in the metal block part of the pump and not in the black plastic box part (although this now has anti-tamper seals stuck across the joins).

Haven't had it fitted yet - will wait until after the Easter break. Will report back when fitted.

Cheers, Jerry

Good to hear Jerry - hope it works when you get it put back in.

Gonna send mine off to BBA next week - we can then contrast and compare on the two companies - good info for the forum.

Fingers crossed dude! Keep us posted?

Might help someone on here :

Update on mine.

BBA Reman have apparently had issues with the repair in that their machine which evaluates a sensor repair has failed. I'm now told it will be the middle of next week before I can get my part back which was sent to them last Wednesday.

It's a pain, given the courtesy car my garage provided is a 17 yr old Renault 5.

I await a plethora of 'I told you so!'

Renault 5

Oh dear not good so they didnt give you a Renault 5 GT Turbo courtesy car then? ;)

have you been sniffing your pepper spray again

Talking of French tin cans - I saw a 2 CV the other day. Reminded me of the time my sister in law got caught speeding in hers. I don't know who was more surprised - her, the copper, or the car

Right, not happy. After 2 weeks bba reman have now said my unit cannot be repaired and need payment to send the part back. I've argued the fact they've had the part for a long time now and they've agreed to reduce the cost of looking at the part and courier fees.

However this still leaves me without a working vsa.

Just to add to this - does anyone know if I try to get the part from a breakers yard-with fault 66-1 do I need the module the pump or both?
Edit should say I'm just off the phone to them and they say it's the internal pressure sensor that is gone and it won't respond ' there's an IC in the sensor' was what she mentioned. I'm told I need the metal block in between the pump and the ecu !

I should add that I'm looking for help lads.

I need to get a new module, preferably from a breaker.

Does the module have to match exactly, or is there some cross-compatibility in them. I noticed another user got one from a scrap yard and it fixed his fault.

Please help.

hope you get a solution bud. if there is one cj'll find it.

hi guys,

after reading all 11 pages, am I right in thinking...

car was serviced at 36,000 including brake fluid (under bonnet job)
vsa light came on 2 days later & still on
car now has 51,000 miles
do i qualify for this "extended warranty" even though I bought it from a non Honda dealer (bmw specialists)???

I have just put up with the light for over a year now as I was watching the thread on THAOC before it disapeared and have just joined here.

Thanks in advance

Dude, I doubt they will do anything under warranty 15000 miles after they did the work...

Did you report it to them straight away? If so why did you leave it this long?

didnt report it to them as i was on my way home when it happened, car was serviced by Honda Mansfield, then i travelled home 365miles. I looked up on THAOC but at the time all that was posted was the 2k price scare followed by me thinking "no chance".

2 weeks after the vsa light came on, I lost power and car went into limp home mode.

I called my nearest Honda dealer (100 miles away) mentioning all this and they told me to take the car to them, they even said the car would be ok to drive 100miles restricted in limp home mode, I asked if they could pick the car up at my cost and was told NO. If I couldn't get it there, they weren't interested was their words.

I took it to my local garage, my prob was a cup full of water from the fuel filter, Honda told me when picking the car up from the Mansfield service that they didn't change the filter but they did drain & clean it.

my luck with Honda service on this car has been......not good to say the least

I'd be surprised the VSA fault would cause the car to go into limp mode. I'd therefore say the faults are unrelated.

You should take your car to a Honda Dealer and have them diagnose the fault and appeal to Honda on your behalf.

I'm told, even though this is an illegal practise, that they're looking for 'loyalty' in the form of a Honda Service History - as the 6 years 62,000miles warranty extension that's been talked about on here is not set in stone.

I hope you're luckier than me in your dealings with Honda 'Customer Service'.

Steve,

You need to get the code confirmed either-way the longer you leave it the less chance you have of getting it covered, guys on here have had mixed results. Technically you are in the extended warranty period.

As Rob has mentioned if they are looking for loyalty, well you've shown that, by driving 300+ miles to get it serviced at a Honda dealer, so there's some things in your favour. Obviously it's a bit more of a trek for you to get to a Honda dealer and with fuel prices up there I would imagine you don't want to be doing too many trips to the dealer either.

Limp home mode was more likely down to the water in the filter, I presume it is now not in limp home mode now.

Stav, sorry bud can you confirm your year? I though yOu were referring to a clumsy mechanic rather than the extended warranty.

You could well be covered!
