Hello everyone,

First of all I'm new here so let me introduce myself. My names Udai, I'm a mug that bought a clocked car for my wife!

She drives an Accord 2.2 i-CTDI '07 plate, the true mileage of the car is 180k.

I've done some reading on this forum before, thanks to everyone who posts on here it's been a big help in getting our car up to scratch.

The car in general is a very nice drive. We have some faults which we're overcoming step by step, but it general its a brilliant drive.

First of all we had a cracked manifold which Honda kindly replaced for us, glad that's out of the way because we have kids in the car. The smell of diesel fumes can't be good for them.

Next in line we have a whistling sound coming from the engine, this is louder when the engine's cold and when it warms up a bit the sound fades into the background but is still persistant. The sound is brought about when accelerating. Another member posted about this and everyone was racking their brains about it, but I believe CJ solved the problem (I need to go back and have a read and look into this asap).

We have a leak from the high pressure hosepipe from power steering to rack, I've tracked this and its visible. A private mechanic said the pump needed to be replaced and quoted £800-£1000, Honda said it was the pipe which will cost about £300 in total. I've found a 2nd hand pipe from ebay for £65 and have someone who will fit it for £30 so hopefully thats this problem solved.

The big problem for us which I'm hoping doesn't lead to a costly fix, occassionally when driving, and I mean very occassionally...the gearbox won't shift into gear, it will become stuck in neutral and refuse to slot into any gear. For example when we're shifting from 4th into 3rd, it will get stuck in neutral, the clutch is stuck in a half way down position and then flip up rapidly. This normally stabilises itself if we pull over, turn the engine off, wait a minute and turn it on. But I want to get to the bottom of this so we can prevent any further damage/stop it in its tracks.

I know I've gone off on one, but the last problem with the clutch is the reason I'm posting today. Has anyone heard of this before? I'm a rookie when it comes to cars but I've spoken to a few mates that say if its a gearbox problem then it won't just sort itself out by turning the engine off and on.

I'm in contact with the garage who regularly serviced the car, im the 2nd owner and the first one had it as a company car from new. Hopefully next week I'll receive a full outline of the work carried out on the car so I have a better understanding of what it needs in the future.

Thanks to everyone for the lengthy read!

Welcome to the forum. Sorry to hear of your problems mate. Sounds like a nightmare. The clutch could just be new hydraulic fluid perhaps?

I was thinking it could be related to the leak from the high pressure hose, but the steering fluid is completely seperate from the brake/clutch fluid right?

Yes, they are separate. Clutch problems aren't unusual on the diesels, but this is a new one on me... I agree with Steve that this is a hydraulic system problem, but I also agree with you that this wouldn't normally be put right by turning it off/on. I think a garage should be quickly able to work out exactly what the problem is.

I wouldn't worry about the turbo whine... it is a common thing, but usually it becomes silent when the engine gets warm. But there really isn't much you can do about it, short of replacing the turbo, so you may as well wait until it fails (or at least starts making a noise like a police siren). It may never fail!

Welcome to TA Udai.

As Jon has said I would expect the whine to either be the turbo or a small boost leak.

The clutch sounds like either the master or slave cylinder is sticking slightly. I'm guessing that pulling over is just giving it enough time to slowly release and go back to normal. Try changing the fluid first as that is the cheapest then go from there.

Welcome to TA Udai.
Haha Jon you've just given me a shocker! It's already started sounding like a police siren, I kept looking in the mirrors the other day convinced a police car was behind me and then realised what was going on.

I've done some reading about the noise and came across this:

'I fixed the siren like sound by loosening the air tube going into back turbo, I wiggled it a bit (there is not much play at all) and re-tight. One bolt hold this in place. And it was gone, must not have been seated right. Hope this might help another newbie like me.'
Being a rookie I don't know what to make of it, think I found the turbo behind the engine but its out of my depth so I will ask the mechanic to have a look when he fits the high pressure pipe.

So you guys think I should try and change the hydraulic fluid? Where/how would I do this? I don't mind giving it a shot before I see the mechanic if you think its easy enough, happy to learn as I go along....infact I really enjoy it.

I don't want to frighten you but my old Accord did the police siren noise and about a day later the turbo went pop.

There might be a diy on here for bleeding/replacing the clutch fluid but basically you have a small fluid reservoir under the bonnet near the bulk head. Master cylinder is at the pedal and slave at the gearbox. Open the bleed nipple pump the pedal and top up the fluid before it drops too much.

try bleeding the clutch, mine turned out to be the clutch/dual mass flywheel and had the same symptoms as you but could also be master cylinder.

Think I found the clutch reservoir courtesy of a youtube vid showing how to do it on a civic, its a little out of my reach but not impossible if im looking at the right thing. Will take some pics and upload over the weekend to make sure im looking in the right place. Is there any danger of getting air into the system if I don't do it right?

I've just had the rear brake discs and pads changed, they also drained the brake fluid, replenishing it. Still a little confused, the brake fluid and clutch fluid are completely separate? I was under the impression they run from the same system.

I've been doing some digging and got hold of the cars entire service history from new which is a blessing, its had a new clutch/dual mass flywheel at 104k miles so dont think it could be that giving the trouble, although were at 180k now. Also I see the last engine oil used was part synthetic and I believe this one should be running Fully synthetic 0w30 so I've got some Castrol on the way. Entire service history below, feel free to comment/make suggestions on anything you think I should ask the previous garage or do to the car. I've highlighted some key areas in bold inc some engine trouble
