Diesel MPG mods

Just as the MOT tester can't really tell from an external visual check, it's difficult for you to check without taking the unit and looking at it.

With it removed, you can tune it outside the DPF thresholds meaning better performance and you tend to see better economy also as a partially clogged DPF will be creating problems in itself.

If you rev on standstill, can you see any smoke emitting from the rear? sometimes that's the easiest way to tell.
the classic diesel PUFF!

bit of a dilema now :(

last week i was finishing off vinyl wrapping my grill :) ...................... then i accidently but luckily found that there was alot of wet oil / black residue all over my intercooler :( on closer inspection the jubilee clip that was holding the pipe to the intercooler had broken off causing a no seal. So cleaned it up, fitted a new clip took it for a test drive and it pulls alot stronger low down now :) :) :)

but.............yesterday afternoon, by fluke again i notice that there was some more wet oil / black residue on the corner this time, so something tells me that there may be a hole in my intercooler...........................now do i buy a genuine replacement or do i get an aftermarket one?

Would getting a big unit hurt the car at all eg, mpg performane as iv had no remap?

Cheers

If i remember correctly, adding a bigger intercooler shouldn't effect anything negatively. They reduce your intake temp of turbo so you can either have a lower boost but have same power (prolongs turbo)or increase power a little bit with standard boost. Either way you'll be fine.

Just found a few comments while searching the web.

"In designing intercoolers, most vehicle manufacturers design them for the optimum workings of the engine, and the vehicles working conditions. In general the misconception is that fitting a larger intercooler will work, this is not the case as the manufacturers have already provided the optimum for the vehicle. This is also matched to the fuel injection system, as this will also provide the optimum fuel for the cooled air, so fitting a larger unit will often create more fuelling problems.
Fitting two units will not be viable as this will create more internal air friction, thus depriving the free flow of air to the engine. If this were a better option it would have already been done as an inter and after cooler.
Intercoolers are matched to air flow, and air requirements, and as all diesel engines receive a surplus of air anyway, whats the point of supplying the engine with an even greater surplus of air.
All in all the claims made have been disproven by me and many others, time and time again; unless there are other modifications to provide substantially more fuel to the engine, then uprating the intercooler is an expensive waste of time."

"Stick with the stock intercooler if you are using the stock turbo. Yeah, some people claim some gains with upgarding the intercooler but perhaps there are other loses as well(spool up and lost of boost)."

Aftermarket intercoolers tend not to produce any positive gain on the Honda diesels. In fact they have the opposite effect in most cases as they tend to be the cheap aftermarket Chinese crap which are usually a single pass design as opposed to the dual pass design Honda implemented.

I've tuned a few now and they nearly always need to be pushed harder to achieve the same gains due to the pressure drops of longer pipework and larger surface area.

The stock IC is the best design if you are sticking with stock injectors and turbo.

The best solution if you really want to do something with your IC is to have the existing cooler reworked by a radiator specialist..

Hope that helps.

^ You see, it's little nuggets of gold like this here that make Fahad such a legend.

You'd ***ume sticking a whopping great big intercooler on is the way to go for gains. People the world over do it to all manner of cars. But with Honda, it's never that straight forward, as Honda tend to do things a little differently (you could say higher quality from the outset). It's one of the reasons we like them and yet they're so disliked by others.

Good catch Fahad.

No problem. Not everyone shares my view as the civic boys tend to believe the big whoosh sound it gives you equates to more power lol

All they do is create more smoke and a drop in power. Even the stock panel filter is best as long as it's a genuine Honda part.

Honda actually manufacture their own panel filters.

I remember we tested the piper cross filters which we actually helped develop, on the dyno on my old accord and the stock filter was marginally better.

I forgot it was a diesel. I was thinking back to my petrol days. Good times!

Does the Type s idtec have the same intercooler as all the other 150 bhp variants? I know the turbo and clutch is slightly different.

some lovely info theere thanks......going slightly off the intercooler subject and touching back onto the grill block Honda / Acura actually do an OEM partial grill block.

I feel this design is ugly and i wont be doing this, but some behind the grill out of site could do.

I've never looked at them closely enough mate.. Check on Lings

no wonder the same old faces on here keep coming up with faults, why can you not leave the car as it was sold?/ and stop playing about with them, if you need a race car then buy one, 187500 miles not a hiccup. am I pleased bet your cotton socks I am.

It's my car il do what I like with it? Who's making it into a race car? Don't no if uv notice but the ***le does state "mpg mods" Honda do make good cars don't get me wrong as iv had three of them but as fahad has said previously and a lot of others there is room for improvement ie mapping cat and dpf removal etc..... I'm trying to find other mods that can go with it.

Car modification is a lifestyle choice. You take the ups with the downs ;) .

Don't worry about John, he's our very own Victor Meldrew.
