Poor Fuel Consumption on 2.4 Auto

Fresh fluid did wonders for mine. The hose to pump o-rings can let air by causing the bubbles.

The old fluid in mine was laden with crud and air, but putting fresh Honda PAS fluid in it improved things no end. No bubbles now, but still discoloured because the old stuff was ancient.
It'll get another flush in the summer.
 
Thanks Matt, so should I just order the fluid? Wouldn't the same thing happen though as there must be air getting in somewhere,
 
If the pump's really noisy, it could have a failing bearing, so flushing £11 of fluid through it just to change it shortly after wouldn't be a great move.
I'll have a look at it Sunday for you.
 
My PS fluid is black too, rang Honda for a quote on replacing it, the girl spoke to the mechanic who said its not something he has changed in 40 years on any customer car nor is it a service requirement, advised if it isnt causing any problems then leave it. My PS functions perfectly fine, so its a case of if it isnt broke why fix it.
I have seen a good write up here on changing it but not brave enough to attempt it. someone mentioned there is a slower process of pumping it out, i have a hand pump which can draw fluid out but presumably it wont do a thorough job!
I guess im going to leave it unless it causes problems, or by leaving it as it is can it cause problems, the Honda guy said its normal for it to look black over time/
 
Mine was full of debris and air and would pulse through the steering wheel.
Fresh fluid has made it far less noticeable, but it's still pretty disgusting in there.

As you say, if it ain't broke, but mine sorta was.

how did you go about changing it?
 
There are loads of good vids on YouTube.

Reservoir off, and clean it, block the reservoir return inlet.
- I used an ear plug, but a short length of a hose With a bolt in the end as a plug is a good idea.

Return hose from the pump needs to go into a suitable container as this is where the old fluid will come out.
- i use small socket as a coupling to an offcut of garden hose.

Fit reservoir, connect PAS feed hose to it and fill with Honda PAS fluid.

Have someone start the car and crank the steering lock to lock for 30secs while you pout fluid into the reservoir so it doesn't run dry.
- this pumps new fluid into the rack, and the old out via the garden hose into your container.

Turn the motor off if it runs dry, and then just top up and restart.

The capacity's just under a litre, but I put a little extra through.

Refit return hose to reservoir, and top up if necessary.

It's a 5-10 minute job.
 
Hi all, first I would like to thank Matt for kindly meeting up with me today to take a look at my car.

So a quick update... Matt plugged the HDS in the car, and the only error to be found was a battery or alternator problem. Nothing else showed up which was surprising but welcome. He also noticed that the power steering hose had a small visible hole and there were signs of fluid leakage visible. We also went for a drive with the Bluetooth app showing all the live data plugged in. I am not sure if matt has the results but again, there didn't seem to be any issues.

The final outcome was a few repairs that need to be carried out.

1) A new power steering hose and O Ring.

2) Valve Clearances (a small ticking noise was noticeable).

3) A new battery

4) Replace all 4 spark plugs

Regarding repair 1,the steering hose, I was thinking maybe the hose can be repaired instead of being replaced. The damage looked very minimal, but I don't know if repairs are possible. I may have to visit Peretec.

that must be the "misfire" that the mobile mechanic found :lol:

many of us have said valve clearances (plus spark plugs) :)


I can't comment on repairing a hole in a PS hose, not in my area of knowledge
 
As Danny says, nothing much to report besides a weak battery, and very slightly rattly tappets.

On a short 40-50mph run it returned 26mpg, but this was, of course following a long motorway trip to me, so the car was all up to temp etc.

All seems good besides a pinhole in the big flexible PAS line.

A couple of things to attend to, but seems a nice tidy car.
 
Thanks guys! Does anyone have a clue where the cheapest place is to buy a power steering hose if the current one can't be repaired. I have seen some on eBay, but they are for a 2.2 diesel. Would they all be the same?
 
I found a used power steering pipe for only £55. Are used Pipes generally okay to use or are they not recommended?
 
Depends if it has a hole in it or not.
pay via PayPal so you can get your money back if it's faulty.
Good idea to get new o-rings from Honda at the same time.
 
Danny, the TSX will be left hand drive, so is a no-no (look at the length of the metal section)

The diesel looks similar, but you'll have to go on the Lings website and cross-check part numbers to be sure.
 
Sorry for all the questions, but does any know where I can find any online guides or information on the required values for a valve clearance?
 
Quick update if anyone is interested, I have ordered a used power steering hose for £55 and bought 4 spark plugs for £50.

Phoned up the mechanic for a quote, and he has quoted 1 and a half hours to change the hose and had no clue what a valve clearance was, and then told me that a valve clearance isn't necessary as the car has hydraulic valves. Obviously not going to get the valves done there ....... going to have to find someone else to carry that out.

Edit: I just called up another garage, apparently a 'Honda Specialist' one and he said the same thing about the valves being hydraulic.
 
Locknut adjusters in the 2.4 AFAIK.
 
Thanks guys... It doesn't really inspire me with much confidence that a so called Honda Specialist doesn't know that Petrol Honda Engines require valve clearances then... Finding it difficult to find anyone around here who know much about Honda's (apart from an official Honda Dealer obviously).
 
I'm having real issues finding an affordable power steering hose. I ordered one for £80 which is the wrong part so am now returning that and the only other option seems to be £160 for a used one. Not sure what to do now :( . Seriously Wtf is it with Honda and their expensive parts
 
have you tried seller's on ebay not listing the specific part but who list the car as breaking for parts, also is it worth trying the main dealer? Honda Holdcroft seems to be reasonable for parts and offer a forum account. I know what you mean about expensive parts.

Have you tried taking the old pipe to a firm like Pirtec and having it fixed??
The problem is that I would have to remove the hos which I can't do and would then be unable to drive the car at all. They also quoted half the price of a new hose, so would be at least £130. Not really worth all the hassle for that price.
 
I don't know which PS hose you're after, but here is the diagram for the PS lines on your car (2004 2.4 auto)

10 is the hose from reservoir to pump, Honda part number = 53731SDAA00 £12.31

4 is the hose from pump to steering rack, Honda part number = 53713SDAQ02 £268.50

11 is the return hose back into the reservoir, Honda part number = 53733SEAE01 £11.70
