I went to see this beauty today....the pics probably don't do it justice. In the metal it was in outstanding condition. It drove nice though only being the 2.8 it's performance was probably on a par with the Accord tbh.

I've always fancied a BMW but tbh, my budget is the money that is already tied up in the Accord.

What do you reckon guys? Any of you got any opinions or experience of the E38 7 series??

This one caught my eye as it is a genuine 'sport' model with slightly lower suspension, lovely alloys and the slightly sportier interior.

What do you reckon?

This....

Not a chance

Me personally, I'd keep the Accord, largely for financial reasons. I imagine the BMW will cost more to run, more to maintain, more to insure and tax too. It's also 11 years old (older than the car you're getting rid of), which even if the mileage is low, means electrical issues could start to rear their head. And I can only imagine BMW electronics to rather expensive, even second hand.

I imagine it's a very luxurious drive though and a brute on the motorway. So if you don't mind the extra money, the larger size (harder to park) and the nagging at the back of your mind that it's getting old. Why not.

Oh wait, it's an automatic! Don't bother

Fair enough....it is the age that puts me off a bit and I hear what your saying about the potential for electrical gremlins. The history file was superb though and the guy has done all expensive suspension related common faults recently. Parking sensors front and back so parkings not a problem....hang on..I'm a bloke, I can park a car!

I wasn't too far away from you test driving it today, near Lewes.

My Accord is an auto too!

^^^Exactly this!

I think id personally like it with a diesel engine., and in an auto.

on outward appearances, I really like the look of your accord compared to the BMW, If you were going down the BMW route I would be tempted with a 335D or a 2seater z4, but the german cars do have there faults in older models and need a computer to fix most of the problems. I Really like BMW's, but in this case the Accord looks better and the petrol is solid! ;)

Am i the only one that thinks the 3 series BMWs aren't big enough? Both inside and out. A few of my friends love the 3 series an unhealthy amount  but i just don't think they're big enough and look like a squished 5.

The 7 series is a fine car but it's a lot more complex than your Accord and with the age, there's more to go wrong.

Personally I'd look for a mint E39 530D or 530i M Sport.

dont get me wrong Si, I think the 5's are sweet too. if i owned a 5 it have to have a M on the badge

I've done a stupid amount of reading about the E39 5 series BMs. And they have a tendancy to need a lot of money spent on them at about 100K miles too. Coolling system, electronics....and that's just for starters :( :( :(

I've had a couple of Beemer's but your Accord looks twice the car, both inside and out.
It's not the problems that would bother me so much, more the more dated feel to the interior and the drive.
The dash clocks in that BMW haven't changed much from the 3 series I owned years ago that was built in 1986

Keep yours, possibly tint the back windows and lower the suspension a bit and it will out shine most cars on the road.

i think there should be a bmw forum for all you defectors to go live on............

:p

If you're gonna swap for a sausage then go wild and get something like a 850i.

Go hard, or go home

Out of all the BMW's the 7 series of that year is my favourite and it would be the only one I would be prepared to do a swap with ( although there are a few things to consider first ).

7 series

Most are autos
Fuel economy isn't that great
There getting fairly old now
Dated interior
Dash desplays fail
High tax bracket
Lazy to drive

Even with those negs it still would be of interest to me as I like big rear wheel drive cars .

The one thing that would stop me at the moment is I still like to give the accord some stick from time to time and it handles soo well for a fairly large car ( The BMW just wouldn't lend itself to that style of driving ).

This would also be an issue for me. You can still chuck the Accord into corners like it's a Civic or a Golf and it will just about bite and feel sporty and tight despite being a large car. Especially impressive given I'm in the tourer. I wouldn't be comfortable chucking this around in the same way. The BMW is a serious autobahn car ;) . But if you spend loads of time ploughing motorways, then I guess this isn't such an issue.

I do like these cars but as they get older they will go wrong more. The accord is a lot more reliable.
I think you have to consider resale too. These cars have very small market and it's difficult to sell them. Then again the accord 2.4 is in the same problem, they are both thirsty motors and difficult to sell at top dollar.
Maybe consider buying a big engined diesel, that will sell alot easier when you want to get rid

To be honest the 2.4 accord isn't that bad on fuel at all if you drive carefully ( when I say carefully I don't mean like a 70 year old ) lol. On a long steady run it is possible to get close to 40mpg out of my 2.4 .

When you have a 2.4 driving carefully is a thing of of the past lol

There's a time and a place for thrashing a car , when I'm on my own in the car it gets driven as hard as the conditions and traffic let me ( well within the law ) however when I have my wife and kids in the car it gets driven carefully and returns very good mpg for the size / style of car .

 I can feel the vtec love B)

If that's your thing get a e39 530d. More practical quicker and will be worth more than 8 quid when you part with it. I have seen very tidy m sports go for between 3 and 4k

Lover these and I would prefer this over the 7 series purely down to resale aspect. However if I didn't care about resale then it would be the 7 series.
I do believe the e39 is a shape that has aged really well and looks amazing. For me the best 5 series they built.

Two words it's German

A "Simon Mayo - three word Tuesday" to describe BMW - Common As Muck.......If you're going to get a big beemer, do it proper such as a 760 iL :))

Honda's just don't break....how about a very late model Legend.....3.5 V6 Just as good, one specification - everything!!!!!

I think it's a great looking car, much nicer to look at than an Accord, but no.

I've had both a 3-series and a 5-series (some time ago) and, with hindsight, I think beemers are somewhat over-rated. And I wouldn't want another RWD car... maybe I'm getting old, but the 'skittishness' on wet or muddy roads is more annoying than fun. And that example would be disappointingly underpowered.

But I guess it's up to you. Deep down, I expect you've already decided!
