What's new

What sort of mpg do you all get on your diesels?

Yup I've noticed the difference between 70/75mph too.

Finally got round to working this out. I did around 520 miles before filling up with 53L of diesel which works out around 49mpg. Thats mainly A roads and a bit of traffic getting into work.

Not bad for a big bus, but goes to show how good the trip computer is. It said 52.8mpg!

That's weird then Chris because some facelift owners are complaining their trip computer is wrong following a remap..

My first proper tank post remap OBC said 63Mpg, but it was actually 53Mpg

. It never was too good anyway though and i'm not too bothered TBH.

I suspect my next tank will do better though once I keep my right foot away from the loud pedal!

4mpg is a fair way out, but I guess its alot better than the something in double figures!

Fingers crossed the car starts to behave itself soon, the sat nav has given up as have the voice controls again!

53mpg is still damn impressive ;)

True and reading my last post it wasn't too clear - the only thing i'm not bothered about was the OBC being rubbish, as it always was anyway! 53 Mpg is about what I was getting before anyway, so happy with that!

:D Only had the car 2 weeks, 2.2 cdti tourer, low fuel light was on when i picked her up but i didn't clock exactly how much i put in, cost £74 ish. that tank lasted me 15 days, commuting to work 25 miles each way with a mix of 30 limits and mway, a few trips around town and short journeys, a few tries at booting her and a spirited run to see what she would do, i saw 130 miles before the needle moved, 325 at the halfway mark and 525 as the low fuel light came back on, i got to 582 before refilling with 56.26 ltrs, i work that out to just over 48mpg, i put a 50ml shot of Millersport in the tank and i now aim to get 600+ hopefully.

I know its boring but the optimum speed is around 67 and below 2k, steady acceleration instead of a heavy foot and the big fuel waster is heavy braking, if your anticipation skills are good and you can be bothered you can get about without too much braking, make sure the tyre pressure is spot on and keep the aircon off.

This is a top mpg calculator linky thingy

We do very mixed driving and we get between 48.9 to 49.9. Just taken the car on holiday and we've covered around 1,000 miles and even fully loaded with dogs and luggage was managed 48.8, did drop to 48.6 at one point but built back up a bit. Having said that, we've just found out that we have a cracked manifold which is letting gases into the cabin so that might knock the MPG slightly, seems a bit down on power the last couple of weeks too.

I agree with you there, just keep it below 2k and there seems to be a good improvement. Just checked my stats and I've averaged 51mpg since March, over nearly 12k miles.

Not a Diesel, but for the sake of comparison, I get 29-30mpg from my 2.4 i-VTEC Tourer. That's between 410 and 420 from a tank of Sainsbury's Super Unleaded. If I do all motorway, that will go up to about 34mpg at real push.

I pretty much drive on the anit-stall around town, barely touching the accelerator. As soon as possible, at the lowest speed I can, I turn the cruise control on (about 25/26mph) in 6th gear, keeping the revs at about 1100. Stay below 2K all the time. The moment you start to enjoy your driving you're getting 18mpg or less :( .

I also always keep my tyres nice and pumped up. Run them higher than the recommend for slightly less road friction to reduce drag. About 38PSi to keep them nice and round. I never drive in ways to justify having them soft and squishy like the sticker on the door recommends. Still handles very well, and it does make a difference for sure.

So to sum up for anyone looking to make comparisons against the Diesels, the 2.4 petrol will get 30mpg if you drive it in the most money scrimping/boring way possible on 97 Ron or higher.

my oldman got about 56mpg I think he said from bristol to liverpool and back again.

This then dropped having driven alittle around bristol, but then went to the nottinghill carnival and back and the tank still said 55mpg.

It's done about 530miles with apparently 100 miles left, but this will drop.

I was tempted to take it to the nurburgring at the end of the year, see what it could get going over there and back ( around 1000 miles or so )

www.spritmonitor.de is pretty good for recording all your fuel costs it works out mpg etc and there is a mobile site for accessing from your phone.

400 miles to 1st half a tank is good going, i'm only getting 300 :(

What fuel additive did you use? Also what sort of speed are you cruising at on the motorways?

my oldmans got to 360miles on the half way mark.

what the hell does "warn status" mean on my name?

I've found the half way mark to be pretty out of it on my car. The fuel gauge is far from linear. I'll get 250 to the half way almost every tank and yet the fuel light always comes on by 390-410, not 500 like the fuel gauge would have you suggest.

And I have no idea what the warn status is  . I click on it and tells me there are no saved messages for this user  ! Don't know what any of it's about.

Warn status is for admin to tick you off for rule breaches. Only you and they can see your status.

Pretty much finished my first tank of regular shell diesel in my tourer, on 490 miles now, light yet to come on.

I calculated I'm going to be getting around 42mpg there, and I wasn't driving all that carefully, although mostly motorways.

Next tank I'll take it more steady, if I can get to upper 40's I'll be happy. I figure if I was driving a petrol model in a similar manner I'd be lucky to get into the 30's, so I'm fairly happy.

Cheers
Matt

Over the last week my first thousand miles gives a rough calculation of about about 47mpg , being a mixture of motorway at an indicated 80, and hilly country lanes. Much as I miss my Legacy (2.0 petrol), that would have returned about 25-28 under similar circumstances.

Our MPG has dropped a bit since we've had our manifold changed............unless that is just coincidence. Currently 48.2. We've found that different diesels give us different MPG, Shell being the best, supermarket diesel returning the worst. OK, there isn't a massive difference but it does make a difference. (If I've already mentioned this shoot me, I'm getting old and repeating myself lol)

702 miles on 55.96 litres which in old money is 57.0mpg :)

facelift saloon - probably helped by a couple of long journeys and a light right foot...

I had the odd blast ;)

No Shell option here either. Using an additive now which seems to have improved performance and mpg. Now getting 41mpg with no motorway's, there are none where I am :), so all a-road or worse with mostly hilly terrain etc. I'm not to heavily booted although I do like to "clean the pipes" every now and then. She can fairly smoke when pushed really hard but she also has 95400mls on the clock.

I get the best MPG from Shell diesel.

Currently my MPG is dropping :( down to 48.2...................no idea why it is dropping! not down to my foot being to heavy lol.

Have you actually checked what you've used based on topping the tank up, or using the On Board Computer? If it's the OBC then I wouldn't believe it anyway, if not then it may be worth looking into - are your MAF/MAP etc all clean and gunge free?

Hi, I'm going by the computer, it has been consistant so far. I will make a note of the fuel put in and work it out manually. As far as I'm aware everythings clean and gunge free, I'll mention it to my Hubby. Just seems strange how the computer is reading consistantly lower each filling since the manifold was changed, nothing else has been touched.

I have a 2006 tourer with 6 gears, just checked mileage over one tank and it was 44mpg, with the computer saying 48. I had a previous tourer exactly the same until July, when it was written off in an accident. That gave pretty much the same. I drive mostly short trips (about 4 to 5 miles) on windy country roads with little traffic, but I drive VERY economically - I don't think I ever go over 2000rpm, mostly pootle in 6th at about 1000rpm. When I do long trips, the computer will show averages well above 50, but whether the error in it is consistent, I don't know.
