Buying advice for a 2.2 CDTI 2004-2006 model, £2000

It is now! :p

I'm guessing you bought yours from a dealer? I would honestly expect to get a reasonable older 7th gen for under £2k if buying privately.

Or maybe everything costs a lot in the Luton area? I used to work nearby (Sandridge) and there are no bargains there!

HORSES FOR COURSES I SUPPOSE

@Jon It was a private sale. I'd been looking religiously on Gumtree and Autotrader for about 3 weeks. I got pretty obsessed with it and the Accords do seem to hold some value - even the high mileage ones. To be honest though, my wanting one effected market value. Everyone wants one when I do and things are worth top dollar.... until I go to sell, then the market crashes and it's worth nothing. This has happened to every car I own! lol Maybe he will find a bargain now I have one ;)

I saw quite a few cheap/low mileage examples advertised 'oop norf', but I didn't have the heart to travel for hours to view cars in case they were rubbish.

Yep, just checked and there's a few bargains on auto trader already!

You missed the Audi diesel Le Mans winner ;)
Apart from Audi, all other factory teams had withdrawn from Le Mans by 2005, because of cost, and Audi became impossible to beat.

In 2006, Audi put all their effort into a diesel in the LMP1 event to sell more TDI's. In 2007, Peugeot decided to enter a diesel in the LMP1 event for same reasons. So when a diesel races a diesel, it's hardly surprising that a diesel wins.

Note that in the LMP2 and GT events, AFAIK only private teams run cars .......which are petrols.

In short, "Le Mans" = "Audi". It would be like F1 without Ferrari/McLaren/Williams and just Mercedes. That's why F1 decided to limit expenditure, otherwise it would have ended up like Le Mans. I'd rather eat raw liver than go to Le Mans.

@freddofrog very funny :D
@hobnob very unlucky, sorry about that, I know the feeling  . However, if anything goes wrong within 6 months of buying from a trader you can just force them to repair it... no need for a warranty (except for wear and tear items that is)
@toffee_pie I think your point about diesel repair risks and costs is fair (as also pointed out by hobnob), except that most people don't pay over a grand each and EVERY year in repairs... you pay well over a grand a year for no more real speed imho. 5 years = 5 grand, wow

do you know how much all them things that can go wrong in diesels cost to fix? and there are many, check the diesel faults. The milage will be high, warranty will be zilch, the probability of getting a fault based on sods law and diesel/ petrols faults in general is going to be pretty high too.

Petrols and diesels are a total different ball game to drive, have you even driven a petrol k24 even?. Diesels are great for low end torque but the petrols can rev far higher and have far better refinement. I think this is already done to death here.

but you already made up your mind, so what's keeping you making a purchase and sticking up pics.

would sooner have a lobotomy than get a diesel. I just paid little over 2k for my car and seeing how well it is now I think it was a bargain. 500quid or so on boot joints is much better than putting up with the beautiful list below had i got a diesel, and that's just since the turn of the year.

I took my car for an alignment check a few weeks back and it was spot on, even after driving in Cambodian quality roads in Ireland for a few months. Car runs sweet as a nut, doesn't burn a drop of oil, handles fantastic and is much more fun than worrying what will go wrong next.

Three Yellow Lights

Yes, but people rarely sign up to a forum to say "Hi, I have a fully working car and thought I'd simply sign up to chat to like minded people" (although that's why I signed up if memory serves). Most people sign up with "Hi, I have a problem...". So the forum will be littered with fault threads by nature.

Now consider how many diesel Accords you see on the road compared to Petrol and how many members here drive diesel compared to petrol. Now consider that in terms of proportionality and how many fault threads there are for diesel and petrol respectively... Diesel will appear unreliable in this situation, but we don't know that it's a true reflection of real word situations.

Let's say the TA members with problematic iCDTIs could be as little as 10% of the Diesel Accord marketshare. This would put the Accord diesel in a positive light if anything. And when you consider the K24s willingness to eat it's clutch, warp it's drive shafts and suffer other things such as electrical niggles (especially the Exec spec such as mine), I reckon that whether you buy a petrol or a diesel you're likely to encounter something fairly needing doing within the year of the purchase, which ever Accord you get...

In fact, what ever car you get full stop! After all they are generally 1.5 tons of moving metal, plastic and rubber with many thousands of tiny explosions happening inside them every minute, travelling at unnatural speeds...

Edit: Jon posted while I was typing, this is addressed to the Eric copy and paste of the Diesel Fault board ;)

Steve if you've got time, would it be possible to move all the "argument" posts to a new thread in general chat called "diesel vs petrol debate" (seems a shame to be littering the OPs thread with stuff he doesn't want to read I guess) ?

Or is it ok to continue it here ?

Or should we just forget it (I'm ok to do that too) ?

I hope the OP buys a car soon so we can finish this.

Different cars suit different peoples budgets and lifestyles and we all choose them for our own reasons. And they all break at some point whether they were cheap or expensive.

I have no problem with diesel vs petrol debate, I enjoy it I'm afraid!
My current car is for sale, once that goes I can start shopping properly ;)

You need a new hobby Eric.

In 80k miles/6 years I've spent £93 on repairs to my diesel (excluding normal service items)... I win.

If I was frugal about spending money and driving consisted purely of saving as much money as i could down to and including buying a diesel, maybe that's something i would do. But I drive to enjoy the ride.

something I can certainly do in my Accord.

alas, I think the enjoyment's gone out of motoring now, with people fretting how many miles they get on a tank more than anything else

I asked him a few times what has he done and what diesel beauty has he got, it seems he is just starting his purchase now

*sigh

I haven't read the thread from the beginning, I can guess how it started, didn't want to cringe at Eric's wordsmith skills and tact LOL

This is what I imagine when I see Eric & Jon arguing:

typing.jpg

It does make me smile...

So with that in mind, I won't delete them for now as they stand for good evidence on how easily Eric and Jon wind each other up for future reference, next time an argument breaks out ;) .

But shall we draw a line under things now as it is rather silly? Of course, if you both didn't need to have the last word, this could have been to bed months ago  .

Eric, stop taunting Jon. Jon, stop stooping to Eric's taunts and let's all be friends :D . Different (engine) strokes for different folks. Some people like Diesel, some like Petrol. Some people like Marmite, others hate it. Some people like Northern girls, some like Asian girls. Hell, some even like girls who used to be boys. People are all different, people are all strange, but it's what makes living so interesting.

How about any further argumentative posts get deleted? Is that cool?

Ok, so here's the line:

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Any arguments from this point onward will be deleted, so don't waste your keyboard skills ;) .

I've just read it all from the beginning, not as bad as i expected, in fact not bad at all, good marks to everyone involved ;)

Only one point to correct, a mistake which everyone fell into (and Top Gear do this as well). Torque from engine is not torque at wheels: there's a gearbox and diff between the engine and the wheels. If two engines reach more-or-less the same speed in each gear, then we need to look at the ratio of engine-revs to speed, to compare the torque at the wheels.

Valid point Brian, but please don't give them any more scope/ammunition to drag this one out

I honestly don' see anu harm in any of the posts, I think Eric's are valid, just wrong in my opinion (and only my opinion).
I also think it is good to hammer out all the pros and cons, that way I am more confident when viewing and buying.... which was the whole point of joining this forum.
Thanks.
Just need to wait for the bait to bite of my overpriced car sale!

Of course. Doesn't everybody?

And for advice about the strange whining noise.

An awful thread... I wish I had never contributed to it, and I apologise for doing so. In my opinion, a good deal of it should be immediately deleted, as it doesn't help TypeAccord's reputation.

More needs to be done to stamp out anti-diesel trolling, it does annoy me and I will respond. Someone has to.
