Exhaust fumes/smell in cabin I-CTDI

Thanks Jon. Trying to rule out a few things myself before taking it to honda as mine is 8 years old unfortunately so out of that straight forward repair.
If it is leaking it may be a trip to Bradford. Unless I can find someone in Warwickshire to sort it.

Just thinking. The smell in the cabin is immediate. Is that symptomatic of the manifold issue
Not really, a leaking injector seal would be immediate as well... and so would a leaky exhaust. My manifold is noticeably leaky when cold, but cannot be noticed when hot, and I've heard a few other people say that their cracked manifolds are worse when cold.

Just stick your head behind the engine towards the bulkhead and sniff with the engine running.

You should have no smell of fumes.

joy looks like i could have this with my car... :( been wondering what the smell was from then seen this thread
time to visit honda but not entirely sure they'll do it because its an 05 plate so a little over the 7 years :(

You might be better off getting a fixed price repair quote from Fahad, especially if you are oop north.

You could replace the manifold with the improved non-crackable version. There's also a cheaper version - take the manifold off and get it properly welded by some specialist like I did.

thanks for the advise guys. might pop into honda tomorrow and see what they say but might have to do what you suggested. i would be more than happy for Fahad to sort me out but im not close enough unfortunately.

matsalka do you have a link to the non-crackable manifold?

That's what Fahad can do for you.

sorry misread that. to get to Fahad it would take me 5 hours one way, if i was closer i would be knocking on his door ;)

People have come further than that, we can turn it around in a day and work through the evening normally..

Right finally got round to the sniff test. If I put my head to the back there is a slight whiff but I have to get right down. When I stop the car it goes.
Nothing really hitting me in the face. There is a whoosh sound as I accelerate which I thought was pretty normal but I could be wrong

Well that could be normal if some of the emission from the tail pipe is drifting back under the car. The real test is if you can actually see smoke rising up from behind the engine... this will be far more obvious with a stone cold engine as it first kicks into life (so you'll need an ***istant).

Some whoosh/whine from the turbo is absolutely normal, again usually louder when cold and accelerating from around 1500 RPM.

Cheers Jon I will try and get the better half to start it up whilst it's cold and have a look. She is pretty adamant it just needs using a bit more

I had mine replaced last year. I knew mine was gone as I had an advisory note on my MOT saying there was a leak in the front of the exhaust so if you get an advisory like this then definitely take it as a sign to get your manifold checked out.

Simon
I had a advisory note at just under 125k from Lookers Honda At bexley quoted £1500 to fix it NOT saving anything about the warranty, they said it probably wont get any worse,so I didnt get it done, now at 150k its a lot worse

Just had my 2008 with 91k in Honda today and was told it should be covered but its going to take 2 weeks before I have an answer!! I'll let you guys know how it goes!!
just to update on the manifold issue.... it took in total 8 weeks from when i first brought it to my dealers attention till when i had it sorted!!! they also had the car for 1 and half days!!

So I've been noticing the dreaded fumes for a little while, just taken it into my local independent garage for a look and it's cracked.
Mine's a late 56 tourer EX with 126000 on the clock so no chance with Honda. Called them for a price, £705.21 inc. I'm all the way down in Cornwall so a bit too much of a trip to Bradford for weld up job!! Going to see if my local independent will take it on, I presume I'll need gaskets and bolts replaced? What are those heat shields like to get off without breaking them? Any other ideas welcome or any pointers for my local guy to help save time?

Hi,
I just wanted to say thank you to everyone for posting information on here. It is so useful. We have had pretty bad fumes in the car for a while now and had it checked by an independent mechanic who confirmed a crack in the manifold. After reading this forum, I called our local Honda garage. They were not aware of the extended warranty but put me in touch with Honda Customer Services who confirmed the fault would be covered (as car had done less than 125k miles, even though it is almost 10 years old). We just needed to pay £90 for the Honda garage to diagnose the problem and we are now booked in for the manifold to be replaced free of charge. So thank you very much to all the helpful posters!!

Cheers :)

Great result,

Customer services agreed to pay half my bill, but the local dealership talked them into paying all of it + scrapped my diagnosis charge.
Good to see 10 years down the line they'll still sort this out.

Hey Lemills,

That's great news. I'm hoping theres a chance for me too as mines 10 years old with 110000 on the clock. Which dealership did it for you if you don't mind me asking?

I'm fairly sure that my manifold is cracked, but the Honda garage didn't notice any leakage, or even the independent garage that I use. It's only noticeable in cold temps, it smells around the front of the car, but as it warms up the boomy effect subsides and is less noisy. Seriously thinking of taking it to Bradford...

I don't like you anymore, take the hint ;)

Hi everyone, just thought i would let you know what happened when i took my car in for a service at my local dealer yesterday. I had just started to notice the smell of diesel fumes in the cabin earlier in the week so while it was being serviced they checked and confirmed that the manifold was cracked. I decided to contact Honda customer services myself to see if they would be prepared to cover it under warranty even though its 10 years old in october but only on 85k. They took my reg and details but insisted the dealer contact them to deal with any potential claim. So after asking the dealers service dept to contact them to see if they would cover the cost in full or contribute and i'm happy to say they came back to me a few hours later to confirm Honda are covering the cost in full and the replacement manifold has been ordered! Happy days!!

I have to say that although I find honda parts ridiculously expensive e.g £20 for a piece of door sash tape, I am very impressed with honda uk. My accord is 10 years old with 110000 on the clock so I held little hope that they would replace my exhaust manifold or even contribute. However after I saw others had had some luck I have them a call. I had to get the crack diagnosed by my local dealer (no charge by the way) and then honda uk agreed to fund the cost of the parts and 3.1 hours of labour. The dealer charged me £120 for two hours labour as it took 5.5 hours to change. Honda uk said 3 hours is what is supposed to take but that is if it was brand new. I would have thought that was optimistic even if it were new but there you go. Picked it up today (and they gave me a courtesy car) and all air seems fresh. Fingers crossed its all sorted but overall I'm quite happy. Now on to fix all the other little annoying things like slow seatbelts, creaking seatbelt buckle, slow windows, oh and a recently snapped boot lid torsion spring! That lot should keep me busy!

Just to update my earlier post. My manifold was replaced during the week with Honda picking up the bill. Have to agree with the above post that I'm very impressed with both Honda uk and my dealer for sorting this for me even though my car will be 10 years old soon! It's always worth contacting them and asking the question! I was working out how to pay for it myself before reading earlier posts on here and seen that some people had success! Slightly off topic but when I picked up my car there was a brand new? 15 plate Accord waiting to be delivered to its new owner. I asked the salesman about it but all he would say was that its been in stock for a while! Does make you wonder how many more are sitting around unregistered ?

Hi Guys, My Car is at a Honda Chelmsford in Essex and they are refusing to repair this due to the fact they have no service history with the car. It's done only 105k. when you guys had the repairs done did you have service history with Honda!!

Update From my experience, I called Honda UK helpline and explained the situation. They said they would look in to it. Two hours Later and the Honda Dealership called me and said the work will be done free of charge under warranty. Great news it always worth an ask

Many Thanks for the help of this forum
