Exhaust fumes/smell in cabin I-CTDI

Filter should be changed every other service - so every 25k miles/2 years - and drained at the intermediate services (so it needs attention at every service). Personally, I think that's overkill.

Your battery will have been disconnected during the manifold replacement, so the ECU's saved short-term fuel trims will have been lost and the system will have reverted to default stored values. But the system will re-learn the optimum settings again, so maybe your MPG will improve over the next week or so.

Hi guys. I'm hoping you can help or maybe offer some advice.

My Accord has exhaust smells in the cabin. I took it to a garage and they identified the problem as being a problem with the exhaust manifold gasket, and replaced it.

That made the problem substantially better, however, there is still a smell of exhaust in the cabin - albeit to a lesser extent. The smell occurs when the car is first started and can happen in traffic when the car is still.

I've taken it back to the garage and they were unable to find the problem, the manifold was removed again and taken to a machinist to skim; but it was already flat and therefore didn't need to be skimmed. There are no obvious cracks in the manifold and they have sprayed it with WD40 to try and find any air bubbles, but found nothing.

Any ideas? Thanks!

Welcome to the forum mate. Sounds like a cracked manifold. Happens to all early iCTDIs. It was a warranty part, but will be out of warranty now. There's tons on the forum to help you out though, just have a search. And stick up a hello thread in the newbie section, let everyone know you're here ;) .

check the fuel injector seals. if one of these isnt completely doing its job then you will get fumes inside the car.

open the bonnet, remove the black plastic engine cover and check around the injectors. if there is wet looking, black spray down there then the seal needs replacing. they cost about £2 from Honda but im pretty sure any injector seal is the same. to replace means removing the injector and old seal, a good clean and refit with a new seal. i had one done for about £70 at a diesel injection specialist. it can get costly if an injector breaks when removed though....

Hi Steve, thanks for the welcome!

Cheers for the advice Matt. I've had a look this morning, I think the injector seals are ok - they look dry. There's some deposits around the first one but I think from reading other threads on the forum that it's probably just a bit of oil spilt when topping up.

Yeah, they look pretty clean alright.

I ***ume that new gaskets were used when replacing the manifold and it's not just a small leak from around the manifold, turbo, etc. If it happens when stuck in traffic it means it's still there, you just can't smell, as it's blown away when moving. Also, as the air intake for the cabin is up high, it could be a lower down issue (hence the gaskets on the turbo, exhaust, cat, etc)

When I has the manifold replaced on my old Accord they said you couldn't see the crack because it closed up when it was removed from the car but opened up when under tension from being bolted up. It was only tiny but enough to cause the fumes.

Hi Jayok,

Yeah new gaskets were used. I was wondering if maybe the manifold just hadn't been tightened enough, they did mention being scared of cracking the head by over-tightening. So maybe I could get a torque wrench and check (if I can find which torque value to use).

Thanks Dave G, that explanation makes sense. I may buy a manifold and ask another garage to replace it for me and see what happens. Expensive option of course but its looking more and more like the manifold is the problem.

Thanks!

I replaced the manifold yesterday. I started noticing fumes in the cabin a few months ago. The smell got worse in the last weeks and I started to use recirculation on the A/C when standing in trafic. Then I removed the heat shield on the manifold and found that one bolt was black from soot.
The service charged me 190€ for the work (5,5h) and welding of the manifold.

What a relief; no more smell and noise :)

If you notice the smell just take of the heatshield off and check for soot. If you don't see any, you can also use a camera to take pictures of the bottom of the manifold.

Hi, guys
It seems I'v got the same problem with manifold. Yesterday after driving around 100 miles I'v noticed fumes in the cabin. Smell gets worse when car is standing still. I rang Listers honda and they told me that exhaust manifold replacement would cost £745.... I was thinking to get one on ebay and ask one of the local garages to fit it. What do you think about it? Is it possible to weld it? Are there any places around Birmingham that could do that for me?

Thanks!

The welding job would cost you around 200-300 quid. Any decent garage can do this.
My preference would be to get the new part fitted.

Try Saki Autos on the warwick road, Sparkhill.

We do fixed price repair at £200 if you can get to Bradford..

Recommendation here for fahads garage, I had this done a few months back (also from birmingham area). Great speedy job, and great service from the guys too. Dropped me off in Bradford town centre for the day and picked me up when it was done. For the 30 in petrol costs, well worth it even just for the day out! :)

I hope you didn't put petrol in it lol

Thanks for answers, I think I'm going to contact F6HAD in few weeks time and arrange an appointment. At the same time I hope it will be a nice day out in Bradford !

My 2004 Honda Accord 2.2 Diesel is leaking fumes into the ****pit, probably due to the manifold issue common to these cars.

I contacted Honda and they said they will fix under warranty if the vehicle is less than 7 years old or less than 125,000 miles, whichever comes first.

My Accord has 96,000 miles so they say I am not eligible as my car is 10 years old.

I have full Honda dealer history up to 80,000 miles but the best they offered was a discount of £80 on the normal £560 repair, so two fingers to those robbing *******s.

Does anyone have the number of the guy in Bradford who can weld the manifold instead of replace it.

Thanks.

Just had my 2008 with 91k in Honda today and was told it should be covered but its going to take 2 weeks before I have an answer!! I'll let you guys know how it goes!!

I think I have this issue. Quite a bad smell outside of the car. Nine is an 06 facelift but it will be out of the 7 year timescales. I'm in Warwickshire could anyone rescind somewhere to look at this that won't mean me getting a new mortgage out.
Cheers
Scott

Is this only a CTDI issue cause sometimes if not all the time on start up i get a smell of fumes in the cabin from my 2003 accord type s 2.4.

Cheers

Dave

I will have it all checked to see what is causing the smell of course. I just wondered if there was anyway near me that could be recommended
Cheers

Scott if you can take a day out and get up to Bradford my guys can do a fixed price repair @ £200.

They can do a Saturday evening normally for out of town customers.

Cheers I may take you up on that. I will have it diagnosed down this way to make sure it is what is then take it from there.
Going in for wheel balance this week sometime so I will ask the tyre and exhaust guys when it's in.

been smelling fumes inside the car when stationary upon start up.. but not smelling anything when i open the bonnet?

I contacted honda and my car is just out of warranty by a few months

I suspect it might be the manifold or maybe the injector?,

so will check first as new manifold is £335.60

part number 06180RBDE01

http://www.lingshondaparts.com/honda_part_number_search_A10.php?partdes=06180RBDE01

i might change it myself, and got them to send me the service bullitin

Further to my previous post. My car is a 06 EX (facelift) and it's not used much due to having a company car. My father in law mentioned the smell when standing next to it but I can't smell anything, but inside the car in does whiff when started.
Is this the manifold or just because it needs a good old run out?
Cheers
Scott

No idea how you can tell.
Would running a decent home co monitor pick it up.
Not a lot of CO in diesel exhaust (unlike a petrol exhaust). You can usually see if the manifold is leaking by having an ***istant start the engine from cold while you watch the rear of the engine for tell-tale smoke. Make sure you rule out a leaking injector seal by having a good look at the injector bases.
