Accord 7th Gen brakes update: All OEM solutions

adding to my previous post as I cannot edit it; while the caliper is the same, the j30 usdm accord's carriers are compatible only with a 282mm disc, and are identical to the 1st gen hr-v, cr-v, nsx and various other honda platforms
the 300mm compatible carriers are however not unique to the type r. as dynacord mentioned earlier, the ka/kb legend uses the same caliper(albeit on the leading edge) and coincidentally, the same disc and carrier size

rags to riches.. as mentioned previously, I was able to source USDM accord calipers on the used market, but they weren't in great shape.
not decided on a color yet but I think a subtle bronze will do with the stock storm alloys
sand blasted and 2k epoxy primered, single component high heat paint just will not do

Hi guys,

Hope you are all well.

Great thread this, as an owner of a CL7 Euro R I've read this thread with interest. Can somebody please confirm if we went down the Type S caliper route the only items that are required are just the front calipers, pads and discs- there is no need for front carriers?

Thanks

you most definitely do need the carriers for the 20mm increase in disc diameter, the stock carrier for 300mm discs will not clear it.

Thanks for your reply

Which then leads me onto where would I get these from? I've looked everywhere online and am unable to find any again similarly so with the Accord Type R set up too.

calipers are quite easy to source, refurbished or brand new, but carriers are not sold separately, but rather come bundled with calipers when ordered direct from honda. it is not cheap, I was quoted £360 per side for type r calipers and carriers here in norway

your other option is to play the waiting game and hope someone's picking one apart and selling off the parts

I recently upgraded my brakes on my cl9 type s. I opted for the Gen 6 type r brakes. I'm not sure what you are after but I do have the calipers and carriers that I took off the cl9 they are for 300mm disc's. I also have a pair of Gen 6 calipers but no carriers. Both need to be refurbished...

@mlkehunt

So if I have understood this correctly, i can use the accord v6 coupe calipers with the first gen crv carriers and still use my stock discs? (I have the 282mm ones)
This would be great since a can source all these parts from local scrapyards in Sweden. :)

I wont even bother trying to find the ATR ones..
How is your progress going along?

This seems to be a great BBBK (budget big brake kit) I think all these parts can be had for pretty cheap! :)

correct, but it would depend on the trim level, as some trims are equipped with larger brakes than base.
the pads don't care about the number of pistons in your brake caliper, it is the carrier that decides compatibility. do note that some of the compatible models below may use a 260mm disc

no progress on my end so far, got my calipers boxed up in the back of the car since january or february, but definitely happening this summer

Thank you very much!
So as long as get your recomended pads i should be fine. :)
I found a set yesterday, so hopefully i can place an order today.

And my local scrapyard is run by a Honda enthusiast, so that will come in handy! :)

bildelsbasen.se has acura rl quad piston calipers off a honda legend if you want to go all the way and get a conversion bracket :)

Ahh maaan! They look awsome!
But the conversion bracket is almost as expensive as a complete swap using accord v6 calipers..And im on a tight budget :p

so I've just shoved new pistons into my type r calipers after painting, and for anyone looking to do this, through trial and error there is a trick to fitting the dust boot. I read @F6HAD's post about his experience of wifely aid simplifying the process, but I soldiered on stubbornly on my own

YO3jwBu.png

by sliding the dust boot to the bottom of the piston and holding it in place firmly, the dust boot can be inserted into its recess in the caliper, and once seated evenly, the locking lip/collar can be massaged gently into its groove in a circular motion, when attempting this, the piston must not escape the boot, but it must also not protrude beyond the bottom of the boot
once seated correctly(you'l know it when you see it), push the piston in squarely

first piston took 30 minutes of cursing, the last 3 took 10 minutes

not to hijack the thread again, but....... I managed to coax my gf into painting my calipers, so.. progress! ended up with blue VW LR5T color instead of golden bronze
black basecoat to give the color more depth

excuse the messy paint box, the filters are due a change but with the ongoing pandemic there are more cars in and out than ever before because stealerships are closed and insurance companies are desperate to fight claims congestion

color without clear

glad to finally be done, got braided lines and new fluid waiting, just need time.
not overly concerned with finish as castings are highly structured and uneven, so drips in the clear are getting shaved off, not polished :p

Hello, I even made account to answer this thread.
I have CH1 Type R twin pot calipers without carriers, and having really hard time finding those anywhere. But maybe I found something:

How about this Cardone 14-1416 bracket? https://www.summitracing.com/int/parts/aaz-14-1416 It shows it fits TSX, but also RL TL CL.

At this website you can see him pairing these brackets with 1994 Legend GS Calipers (17CL15VN) with 300mm rotor.
Think I dont care milling something off the bracket to center it.

Maybe this could be connecting piece between CH1 calipers and CL9 Accord?

If anyone can confirm the above that would be much appreciated!

that's a great find! I would not worry about the necessity of milling 3mm off the mounting surface, the builder is using 25mm thick discs, the acura RL and accord type R use 28mm thick discs, he is simply centering the disc in the carrier by compensating for the thickness difference elsewhere
bearing in mind a stock 300x25mm facelift accord disc would have the same offset "issue"

by all accounts bar visual ones it is identical to the type r carrier. the cardone RL carrier is flatter on the bottom end of the pin chambers and the casting is simpler

Fzxqq3z.jpg

but that may be down to a revision because there is one type of caliper but two types of carriers for the type r, I have not seen both side by side but they do use different slide pins.
mine uses the larger variant which is practically identical to the acura RL pins for the two pot caliper and carrier

Well I just ordered those brackets with Legend install kit and those bigger slider pins in picture, pretty sure I got it right crossmatching numbers, but both pins are easily available if I got it wrong.

I would not mind using 28mm disc if possible, how about CL7 Euro R 300*28mm disc? Or does it make alignment of disc even worse? Again my car is CL9 with ATE crap in front.

hope it all works out in the end!
it should bolt straight up. I have ordered type r 300x28mm discs myself and they are dimensionally identical to the stock cn2 300x25mm except for the 3mm difference in braking surface thickness and the center hub cutout is 70mm whereas stock is 64.2mm. total height of disc remains the same 47.2mm, the euro r options retain the same height. the only thing that could be iffy would be the thickness of the mating surface between hub and disc, but I wouldn't be concerned

Fascinating discussion guys.

For the technically inept like me am I right in thinking that for this to work you would need:

Honda Legend twin pots
The brackets mentioned in the link
Accord Type R discs
Honda Legend pads

Please correct/confirm as necessary.

Thanks

I was looking at 45251-TA1-A01 (Euro R/TSX) disc, which should be 300*28mm with 64.2mm center at least in brembos 09.B621.10 picture, did you mean CH1 disc was 70mm center?

yes, that is correct. the euro r/tsx variant has the correct center cutout as well as the correct 47.2mm total height

correct, but you are not limited to legend calipers or pads, nor are you limited to the type r discs. I could stay with my stock 25mm thick discs but I chose to upgrade to 28mm.
twin pot calipers can be had off legends, accord type r's as well as v6 accord coupes, but the integra type R single piston and various others will also fit because it is made for the same bracket and pad combo albeit with different bracket heights for different discs, ranging from 260, 282 and 300mm
any pad that fits the type r/legend carrier is also interchangeable with a vast array of 90s and early 00s hondas,

Just did some check, and looks like only bigger slide pin is paired with cardone bracket in question.
So is it that with 25mm disc you need to mill the bracket to make it center, but with 28mm TSX disc and bracket should be 100% bolt on?

you are overthinking this :p

whether the disc grows or shrinks 3mm, the spacing between the rear of the disc and the bracket remains the same when the total height of 47.2mm is unchanged.
IF and when the total height is unchanged, the ONLY way it can grow in thickness, is to grow towards the wheel, away from the car.
inversely, if the thickness shrinks, it ONLY does so by shrinking away from the wheel, towards the car.
the increase or decrease of braking surface thickness affects both sides, but it does not alter the clearance behind it

in the end, it is a floating caliper ***embly and as long as the pins don't bottom out inside the bracket(too much front side thickness) or the disc interferes with the bracket, it does not care about the offset of the disc being biased towards the piston or the "claw" of the caliper.
what the civic builder did to his brackets was likely unnecessary from a clearance standpoint

I will try to explain with pictures when my discs arrive

Brackets just arrived, only missing guide pins. Should have it all together this week for test fitment!

Everything was perfect fit, pictures here
I'm using 25'300 disc since I had them already and old ones already beated badly. Also brake pad I use 13.0460-5878.2 could reach more towards center and be thicker, looks like these are meant for smaller diameter disc. As you can see you def can use 28mm disc, the gap is over 4mm on outerside between bracket and disc.

Part list:

Caliper CH1 type R (Left 45019-S1A-E21 ABS 720741, Right 45018-S1A-E21 ABS 720742)
Bracket Cardone 14-1416
Guide pins Frenkit 811006, Quick Brake 113-1496X
Hardware kit Centric 11740026, ABS 1208Q, Herth+buss J3664011
Pad 45022-S1A-E70, ATE 13.0460-5982.2
Disc 300*28mm Euro R/TSX 45251-TA1-A01, Brembo 09.B621.10

edit. and yes my Norwegian friend, it's Biltema red :)

Fantastic initiative taken and great result as well! This means it is possible to source brand new/refurbished parts for anyone interested in going this route, no more hunting scrapyards and eBay listings

Of course it is biltema red :D but it is as good as anyone elses red

Great result and update!

Do you have the part number for a left side caliper please and also where did you purchase them from?

Thanks

I updated post and put more parts numbers I had and correct ones for disc and pad not to confuse anyone with wrong ones I used.
Guide pins bolt was too long/thread in guide pin too short and had to use washer under bolt to make it tight.

Hi guys,

I think I may have missed an important minor detail in all of this and I would like some clarity before I get some calipers. I have a CL7 EURO R, which I believe has 300mm front discs (correct me if I'm wrong) would I then need to purchase carriers/brackets if I went with a front caliper set up that caters for a 300mm disc for example Accord Type R?

Am I right in thinking that if I go for a front set up that needs larger discs I would then need different carriers for example Accord Type S diesel?

Thanks
