it sounds like a dodgy connection and i guess it's hard to say until the unit is taken out to have a look at. It's a relatively simple thing once it's out. A simple discnnection and reconnection may be all it needs if not you may need to delve further and have a look at the LCD board...

It really depends on what functions you want from the Nav. If you want just simple convenient navigation, build in is always better IMHO....no fiddling with cradles, sat lock issues and generally forgetting the thing! i use TomTom as a backup on the phone but the built in system has spoilt...
