Diagnosing Aircon Problems

Buying a relay from a Honda dealer must surely cost a fortune?

Mine was about £4 from eBay (admittedly there was an extra pin that needed to be removed). I'd post a link, but the place I bought mine is no longer selling them.

Can't the relay be swapped with others on the vehicle to prove suspicions about it?

Denso = 39794 sda a02

Best to order online then....mines the Mitsuba one iirc

So which is best?

Do you know of other relays on the vehicle that could be swapped as a quick, free test?
No difference between the two, just get whichever part number comes up cheapest in searches.

The fan relays are identical, but he says the relay works by tapping it, so it's on its way out.

Or there's a bad connection underneath...

I don't think it's too difficult, just be careful that there may still be some gas in there, this is how I suggested to undo a joint to check --> http://typeaccord.co.uk/forum/topic/14445-air-con-problem/?p=246197

The compressor on my car stopped working a year ago and I intend to remove it and strip it down.
You can fit a shorter belt
short belt for use with compressor removed on 2.0 / 2.4 --> http://typeaccord.co.uk/forum/topic/22149-air-con/?p=233699
short belt for use with compressor removed on 2.2 diesel --> http://typeaccord.co.uk/forum/topic/22754-22-diesel-fan-belt-without-air-con/?p=236539

When you remove the compressor, drain the oil out and keep it, or at least measure the amount, because that's how much has to go back into the rebuilt / replacement compressor

If you use or even just leave the car for a while without a compressor in place, block the pipes.

yep that's why you're better off removing the one that's currently on the car, block the pipes, and fit a short belt temporarily.

Then you can either
1. strip it down and overhaul it yourself (which is what I intend to do)
2. send it away to be overhauled (no idea where but IIRC a couple of people did this)
3. get an identical one from a breakers

ahhh, just remove "_pfk" from the url to get Honda part numbers

so the link becomes --> http://www.lingshondaparts.com/honda_car_parts_selection?block_01=17S5T501&block_02=BOP0201&block_03=9812&block_05=hcr

#2 38801-PCA-006 VALVE SUB ***Y., SAFETY £124.20

#3 38810-PRA-006 COMPRESSOR COMP. £876.78

#4 38900-PND-006 CLUTCH SET, COMPRESSOR £397.20

#5 38908-PRA-006 PROTECTOR SET, THERMAL £62.14

Looks like they're different which doesn't surprise me as the most significant differences between different models will be the routing of the piping as it comes out of the compressor, and also the mounting points of the compressor, but basically the compressor will be the same otherwise

Compare with CL7 and CL9 which will have same routing of the piping and same mounting points

I will have a look at my cl9 vs my cl7.if the pipe routing looks the same.i will try removing the compressor from my cl9.any way i can tell if the pump works off the car.as the ac has never worked in my cl9 and Could also be the compressor is dead

I used to like all posts but two things would happen, 1. I would run out of likes, 2. When I like from Tapatalk it does not save so now I only like sometimes Admin we need higher quota of likes and fix Tapatalk issue Rant over

How come honda_saj liked your post and not mine.lol

I tested my cl9 compressor and the clutch is has gone.i can't get it to click
I'm a bit confused now, which car had the faulty compressor in the first place, CL7 or CL9 ?

1. how did you know the compressor needed replacing ?
2. did you get round to checking if CL7 and CL9 compressors are interchangeable ?

Regarding a compressor that doesn't "clunk" when "hot-wiring" from relay socket pin 2 to battery +ve, the best thing to do is remove the compressor and test the electrical parts

#4 38908-RBA-006 PROTECTOR SET, THERMAL (new = £91.14)

#9 38924-RBA-006 COIL SET, SOLENOID (new = £141.81)

Both cars have ac fault
we re gassed the cl7.yet the temp in the cabin didnt change.so i ran all the tests on page 1 and everything worked.so we drained the gas and refilled but the gauges on the machine showed no signs of gas movement.as i hadn't used the ac for a year.only thing we could think of is the pump or seals.

My cl9 ac has never worked in 6 years of ownership.but never looked into it until now.im not going to fix the cl9 as i will probably start stripping for parts soon

ah ok, so CL7 compressor just wasn't compressing, and CL9 exhibits electric clutch not responding. Since about one year ago the electric clutch on the compressor in my CM2 has done the same thing, I keep meaning to buy a shorter belt and then remove it to check the coils out. But if I can't fix the coils a new set from Honda is more than that new Denso compressor you've found in #198.

It's also available from same supplier on ebay --> http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/371901485059

That could be the case

Brian I can't thank you enough for the amazing breakdown you've provided at the beginning of this thread.
I've got 7th gen diesel Accord and air con stopped working on it. Took it to a local air con specialist and he advised me the compressor clutch wasn't working. Used your thread to work out if that was the case and I can confirm he was wrong!
I hear the clunk when I connect wire with the +ve terminal on the battery and where the relay is. I also hear clunk when I bridge across two connectors in the relay. Car is blowing cold air when car is started and wire is connected to the relay and +ve terminal. So I was under the impression its the relay. I ordered a new one from Honda Stoke yesterday and they kindly delivered it today. However, to my disappointment the air con still isn't working when new relay is in!
Where do I need to look at next? Please help!
